Using a Firewood Rack in Interior Design

Anyone with a wood burning fire will need some kind of system to store and manage firewood, and a firewood rack is the obvious choice. Firewood racks are typically chosen for function rather than design – they are a place to house wood for the fire and nothing more. This is a real shame, as the fact is that your firewood holder could actually be a great feature for any room if you plan carefully and have the right design elements in place. Let’s take a look at a few key tips that will help you use a firewood rack to bring out the best in your room design!

Size

If you want to use a firewood rack inside, you need to find one that is proportional to the space you will use it in. Large racks are mainly used outdoors because they take up too much space, but you can find something roughly the size of an end table that may work well in your home. If you have a small space, you can use a small rack close to the fireplace. If you have a large room to work with, you may use a long one along the wall. Take a look around the room and see what you could logically fit in the space.

Style

The look of the rack should match the general theme you have going in your room. If most of the space is meant to look rustic and natural, you could get a rack that has twigs or wood on the side as a complement. If you have a space that is more elegantly designed, you may go for an ornate rack with swirls and patterns on the size. If you have a modern room, you can find a rack with clean lines that will fit well with other furniture – an iron firewood rack with upright bars would be a good choice here.

Function

Importantly, you need a firewood rack that can hold the amount of wood you need in that space. If you rarely use the fireplace, you may not need anything more than something to hold five or six logs may. If your fireplace is constantly running though, you may need a larger rack so you have easy access to the wood at all times. You can also look for dual purpose racks that can act as table so you can set things on top of them in the warmer months. This can provide added storage as well as a useful work surface! You could even use such a rack as an end table or coffee table if the design was right.

All things considered, firewood racks are a great example of form and function combined. Essential for keeping your firewood neat and tidy, they can also add so much to a room if chosen right!
